APOLAKKIA Rhodes Island

A Church in village Apolakkia on the island of Rhodes - Greece

Apolakkia is a very small and quiet village very close to Lindos, following the road from Gennadi to Vati, 92 kilometers away from Rhodes city. The village looks like built inside a ditch, and this is where its name comes from ("lakos" in Greek means ditch). From the very beginning, you feel like stepping into charming old post-card - small traditional houses with tile-roof, old windmills, and quiet monasteries.
The magic of this place comes from the beautiful Apolakkia Lake with its impressive dam. The village beach invites you to swim in the deep blue waters and to relax under the shadowy trees, in complete silence and peace.
There are some tavernas to choose from, but if you are in the mood for fresh fish, then you should definitely go for Chrisama Restaurant.
Only 4 km after Apolakkia in direction Kattavia, this is the place to enjoy a relaxing lunch with excellent food, in a friendly atmosphere, facing one of the finest views at the west coast.
There are also few history prints appealing you in Apolakkia. Step along the main street and it will guide you to the village square, where you can admire an old Italian mansion, in the classic Italian architectural style - one of the most beautiful buildings in Rhodes Island, now used as Cultural Centre.
There is also a small post-Byzantine temple, waiting to be discovered next to the lake's dam, on the way to the nearby village of Monolithos - "Saint George Vardas" built in 1290 a.C.. Enjoy an amazing view from this temple over the Fournoi beach.
Go further and discover two legendary places near Apolakkia - the foundations of the Agia Irini church, dating from the 6th century, and the ruins of a paleochristian temple dedicated to Saint Anastasia, in the Zonara region, on the way to Kattavia.
For its calm atmosphere, its beautiful lake and its history dash, the village Apolakkia is one of the places that you should definitely pay a visit during your Rhodes holidays.
